Cap Gris Nez and Cap Blanc Nez in France Pas de Calais

Cape Blanc-Nez is a cap located in the Pas-de-Calais, made up of vertical cliffs and chalk marl of 134 meters high with rocky foreshore, whose steep sides ending in the sea It is a symbolic site of the Regional Natural Park of Caps and Marais Opal, which is one of the places emblematic of the Grand Site Two Caps.

On a clear day, one can clearly observe the cliffs of the English coast, the Cap Gris-Nez and the Bay of Wissant south-west, the plain Flemish north, the hills of Boulonnais to the east.

The Cap Gris Nez keeps the aftermath of war conflicts of 14-18 and the second World War.

The current lighthouse at Cap Gris-Nez type cylindrical tower masonry stones, which brings the beam to 45 km, was commissioned in 1957.


There is the Regional Centre operational surveillance and rescue (CROSS), which is a body to monitor the strait where sea traffic is intense. The CROSS Gris-Nez’s mission is to monitor an area from the Franco-Belgian border to Cape Antifer (Le Havre).

It marks the narrowest point the Strait of Pas-de-Calais, of strategic interest to the international maritime transport, which connects the English Channel and North Sea. This is the most frequented Strait in the world with over 500 movements per day boats, carrying all types of goods, including hazardous materials.
