Asking Game by France/Irish Crew

Here is a great song by my buddy Philippe Boudal from France and currently living in Dublin, Ireland.

This song has been created in Philippe’s house in Dublin, Ireland. It came from a few chords that sounded good at acoustic guitar. With some help of Nico (Bass) and ProTools, a full Saturday has been necessary to record the synthé (piano, violon, choir and cosmic sound at the beginning), the electric and acoustic guitars, and the voices, plus a few hours for mixing.

The first sentences of the lyrics were originally written by Philippe for another song called just a “just a little drink” (a more funny and reggae one). It sounded great with the music so Philippe re-wrote the rest of the song so that it would fit to the atmosphere which is a bit more dramatic.

The original topic was a funny advice like “stop wondering, just take a little drink”. It became something deeper about observing someone being lost and falling into kind of a depression, and not being able to help.

Philippe, Nico, Alex, Rob and Chris are now trying to play it live with their other songs, renting a studio first, and hopefully in some pubs later on…

“Later Time” Music and Video by Xarj

I created the song ‘Later Time’ a long time ago with the base piano chords and a certain rhythm. When i lived in the Basque Country in France, I met Philippe Boudal at Quiksilver, we were both in our internships. During one of our numerous music sessions, I showed Phil this song I had recorded and he loved it! So he recorded his own vocal part, I had already recorded a version of the music with my own voice.

In the Basque country there is one thing I really enjoyed watching, big waves in the Atlantic Ocean! I love to film surfers on big waves and also virgin waves. So one afternoon I went to the beach in Anglet and filmed the waves during a big winter swell. This is exclusively what is seen on the video attached to this post. Nice, simple music video. I think you can’t go wrong with waves!

This song is not finished! The main instruments have been recorded; blues guitar, philippe’s vocals. We chose a rapid beat for this song which is quite different than what you would except from a guitar blues song! But hey, it’s a new style of music! You gotta keep an open mind! I was going through my 45 personal music cds to find the latest song I’d add on my Blog and Podcast and fell upon “Pile ou Face”. Although it’s not finished, I thought I’d add it online because it’s pretty good, it’s got a good rhythm and great vocals by Philippe Boudal. Phil is currently in Dublin, Ireland and I have no clue when we’d have time to finish this song! So I have included the first part of the song. Enjoy!

“Infinite Wisdom” – Another great song by the Doubleminds!

Infinite Wisdom starts with a nice progression including a Guitar and Funk EP loop. The beat and bass slowly fade in until Philippe starts singing. You’ll hear a rhythmic metal guitar in between the singing which I found in my loop library. At 1min40 the music transforms into a different melody. I love the beginning of that second part! The loop sounds offer a strong feeling! Great piano, vocals and soft hats are very compelling. Then at 3min30, we switch back the the original melody. Bass, beat, organ and repeating vocals until the fade out at the end of our song. Que du bonheur! This song is royalty free so you may use it for your projects but please leave us credit for this beautiful song!

Phil and I made this song in Anglet, France during a wave less week in the Basque Country. When you are used to going surfing almost everyday and then you can’t for a long period of time because the swell is too small, you go crazy! Hardcore surfers will understand me! So to pass the time, we made “No Waves Week” in my underground room.

In this free mp3 music , a 6:38 piano improvisation by Phil. During our recording sessions for DoubleMinds , Phil would practice playing piano and i’d always record his playing without him knowing. The keyboard was always connected to my computer so i simply had to press the record button in Cool Edit. Since it is not prepared and improvisation, there are a few mistakes but i hope you can get over them! Phil plays extremely well and has an amazing musical ear!

On January 11th 2006, the temperature in the ocean’s water at Anglet was at 10 Degrees Celsius. Equipped with our thick wet suits (4/3), we braved the heavy swell in the Atlantic Ocean. What a great way to finish the day with a new song! I had to cut the song which originally lasts 9 minutes so you have the best 4 minutes.

Highly recommended : One of my favorite songs by DoubleMinds : “After Life” : Nice calm music with just the right amount of Piano, Guitar and Vocals. A Great Melody too! Tell me what you think!

How original are our titles? Early Jan stands for Early January, and guess what, we made this song on January 8, 2006. For us, titles and lyrics are mainly for marketing purposes! Do you agree? You gotta agree at some extend! Obviously most of the songs you’ll hear on the radio will be precicely thought out songs. Everything was calculated for the maximum number of people to enjoy it. If you create a song purely for yourself, which is the case for us, then you spend more time on what’s important to you. In our case, it’s the instrumentals and the overall melody. Phil if you’re reading this, help me out here!

In the photo above, you see a DoubleMinds music creation session. Myself in front of the dual monitor computer system checking out Phil’s guitar recording which is done with a simple microphone. On the other photo, myself trying to play Phil’s electric Guitar.

Another kick ass song is : “Xarj with Guitar“. I cannot play guitar but i still gave it a shot and recorded some basic notes. With musical computer software, i was able to turn my riffs into a great sounding music! Philippe liked the song so we worked on it and “DoubleMinds” then created their own version of “Xarj with Guitar“.

If you look at the date of this post, it’s March 29, 2007 and today is a very important day for my entourage and Bissac. We are meeting with ReflexGroup in Paris to offer our company a chance in the big league of handbag brands!
