Montreuil sur Mer (Pas-de-Calais)

Montreuil, sometimes called Montreuil-sur-Mer, is a French city located in the department of Pas-de-Calais and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. Its inhabitants are called Montreuillois.

The motto of Montreuil sur Mer is “fidelissima picardorum natio” which means “The very faithful nation of Picards” and was assigned to the city by Henry IV in 1606 during his visit to the city.

Located on a promontory overlooking the river Canche, near Etaples, Montreuil sur Mer enjoys a privileged geographical position. The city is isolated from neighboring plateaus thanks to the valleys of Écuires and La Madelaine. This natural position of command gives Montreuil sur Mer a defensive vocation.

Although located more than 10 km of the sea, Montreuil sur Mer was long a sea port of first importance. The boats sailed to the port on the Canche which now only allows navigation of fishing boats and kayaks. This feature explains the name of Montreuil-sur-Mer. It was the same in 987 at the accession to the throne of France Hugues Capet, the only seaport of royal importance.

The heritage of Nantes is vast thanks to its rich history. The Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne (Dukes of Brittany) is the emblem of the historic city. The historic districts have many places and buildings that can trace the history of Nantes. Among the cathedral, which is undergoing a major “facelift” for 5 years, as well as various other statues and columns, which reflect the history of this city full of memories. The mayor of Nantes, Jean Marc Ayrault, wishes to enter the city of Nantes and the Loire estuary in UNESCO.

Le Croisic

Le Croisic is located on the shores of the Loire-Atlantique, twenty kilometres north-west of the Loire estuary. Le Croisic, Batz-sur-Mer and Le Pouliguen stand on former rocky islets connected to the mainland by a deposit of sand called the La Baule dune. Just across the harbor, a few dozen metres to swim, Pen-Bron has also been linked to the mainland by sand deposits that have formed the dune, which starts from La Turballe. Both belts and sand have isolated a marine area which has become more calm and was thus transformed into a mudflat, housed for over a thousand years in salt marshes. Rocky coasts, dunes, marshes and mud flats are the types of landscapes to be found in Le Croisic.

Guérande

Guérande and its salt marshes with the fleur-de Guérande salt, and its medieval town surrounded by ramparts complete with 4 fortified gates and towers. The medieval city of Guerande is classified since 1976 in “protected sector”. This historical, architectural, culinary and economic makes the Guerande a tourist centre of Côte d’Amour also the west of the Department of Loire-Atlantique.

A beautiful Rainbow in France early July 2008

A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that makes visible the continuous spectrum of light from the sky when the sun shines during the rain. It is a colorful arc with the outside red and purple inside.

The rainbow contains 6 or 7 colors that differ depending on the weather. One can observe the effect of a rainbow every time there is water suspended in the air and a light source (usually the Sun) shines behind the observer. The most spectacular rainbows take place when half the sky opposite the sun is obscured by clouds, but that the observer is in a place where the sky is clear. Another common place where you can see this effect is close to waterfalls.

Lille saw Charles de Gaulle’s birth and growth who’s house is now a museum. The General Louis Faidherbe, director of Senegal, was also born in Lille.

The scientist Louis Pasteur was born in Dole (Franche-Comte), was appointed professor of chemistry and dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the city from 1854 to 1857. A statue is dedicated to him and the Pasteur Center of Lille is one of the largest in France after Paris.

The actor Philippe Noiret and the humorist Maxime and media stars Nicolas Hulot, Bruno Masure, are from Lille.

The architectural heritage of Lille stretches from the Middle Ages novel (crypt of the collegiate church of Saint-Pierre). With Gothic churches Saint-Maurice and St. Catherine, Renaissance (Beaurepaire building and house street Bass), Flemish Mannerist with the Old Exchange or the house of the Gilles Boë. Classical with churches Saint-Etienne and Saint-Andre as well as the citadel of Vauban. A city covered with old buildings of the seventeenth and eighteenth century style unique to the city. With neo-Gothic buildings the Catholic University and the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille. With art nouveau home Coillot which is the architect Hector Guimard, Hausmannien rue Faidherbe, neo Lille with the new scholarship, art deco hotel with regional City and finally the modern skyscrapers of Euralille.

The ramparts that surround the city since the Middle Ages until the nineteenth century remains:

Noble Tour (memorial deportation) of the fifteenth century.
The door of Ghent and the door of Roubaix (late sixteenth early seventeenth century).
The door of Paris (mid-seventeenth century), built in honor of Louis XIV.
Citadel masterpiece of Vauban as well as parts of fortifications drowned in the green at the end of the Avenue of the Belgian people.
The door of Dunkirk (early nineteenth century)

Cap Gris Nez and Cap Blanc Nez in France Pas de Calais

Cape Blanc-Nez is a cap located in the Pas-de-Calais, made up of vertical cliffs and chalk marl of 134 meters high with rocky foreshore, whose steep sides ending in the sea It is a symbolic site of the Regional Natural Park of Caps and Marais Opal, which is one of the places emblematic of the Grand Site Two Caps.

On a clear day, one can clearly observe the cliffs of the English coast, the Cap Gris-Nez and the Bay of Wissant south-west, the plain Flemish north, the hills of Boulonnais to the east.

The Cap Gris Nez keeps the aftermath of war conflicts of 14-18 and the second World War.

The current lighthouse at Cap Gris-Nez type cylindrical tower masonry stones, which brings the beam to 45 km, was commissioned in 1957.

There is the Regional Centre operational surveillance and rescue (CROSS), which is a body to monitor the strait where sea traffic is intense. The CROSS Gris-Nez’s mission is to monitor an area from the Franco-Belgian border to Cape Antifer (Le Havre).

It marks the narrowest point the Strait of Pas-de-Calais, of strategic interest to the international maritime transport, which connects the English Channel and North Sea. This is the most frequented Strait in the world with over 500 movements per day boats, carrying all types of goods, including hazardous materials.

My Weekend in Paris and Etaples in France

I left Toulouse on Friday April 4, 2008 and returned on Wednesday April 9, 2008. I spent my weekend in Paris with Claire and the beginning of the week at Claire’s place in Etaples. About Nice on the coast of the Mediterranean sea in France ::

Nice is a city in southern France located on the Mediterranean coast, between Marseille and Genoa, with 986,903 inhabitants in the metropolitan area at the 2007 estimate. The city is a major tourist centre and a leading resort on the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur). It is the historical capital city of the County of Nice in French Riviera.

The Promenade des Anglais (”Walk of the English”) is a celebrated promenade along the Mediterranean at Nice, France. Before Nice was urbanized, the coast at Nice was just bordered by a deserted band of beach covered by large pebbles. The first houses were located on higher ground well away from the sea.

Starting in the second half of the 18th century, the English took to spending the winter in Nice, enjoying the panorama along the coast. When a particularly harsh winter up north brought an influx of beggars to Nice, some of the rich Englishmen proposed a useful project for them: the construction of walkway (chemin de promenade) along the sea.

The city of Nice in the French Riviera, intrigued by the prospect of a pleasant promenade, greatly increased the scope of the work. The Promenade was first called the Camin dei Anglès (the English Way) by the Niçois in their native dialect Nissart. After the annexation of Nice by France in 1860 it was rechristened La Promenade des Anglais, replacing the former Nissart name with its French translation.

About Cannes in the French Riviera ::

Cannes is a commune in France, located in the department of Alpes-Maritimes and the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Cannes is one of the best-known cities of the French Riviera, famous for the International Film Festival and the glitzy hotels, cars, beaches, and visitors.

In the 19th century, Cannes saw its most significant developments with the arrival of foreign and French aristocrats in the 1830s, who made the town their holiday home, building various properties around the area. The arrival of a prominent British politician – Lord Henry Peter Brougham – in 1834, while on the way to Italy, was the main catalyst in the town’s expansion. Development encouraged enterprise and the Cannes Railway Station opened in 1863 followed by the Tramway de Cannes transportation system in 1899. By the 1930s, the town had secured its status as a fashionable holiday destination and was further placed on the map by the first international film festival in 1946. Today, Cannes still retains a reputation as a chic and trendy city and attracts both the rich and famous as well as regular holidaymakers.

About St-Tropez on the Mediterranean Sea ::

Saint-Tropez is a commune of the Var département in southern France, located on the French Riviera. Popular for its famous and wealthy guests, it is often called the Marbella of France.

Set on the blue waters of the Golfe de Saint-Tropez, this modern version of a medieval town is most popular for the line of luxury yachts in her harbour and the facing line of terrace cafés, divided by a parade of strolling tourists and slowly cruising sports cars.

Night life is very lively and often one can see helicopters bringing elegant guests to private parties, in one of the many luxurious villas in the bay. “People watching” is a favourite sport in Saint-Tropez in the summer. Visitors like to sit in the outdoor cafés, hoping either to be seen or to see someone else.
